Around 60,000 people trudged from as far as Stalybridge to St. Peter’s Square on August 16th 1819 to hear Henry Hunt speak about radical reforms in Georgian society. This meeting was to become known as the Peterloo Massacre, when drunken volunteer cavalry killed 20 people and maimed scores more. Join us as we trace the steps of our ancestors and refuse to let those who died on St. Peter’s Field be forgotten. We will meet at Barrowfields in Middleton at 8.45am and arrive at St. Peter’s Square at 12.30pm on Sunday 17th August 2014.. you’ll see the banners flying.
